Liverpool’s Huge Victory Over Chelsea: What did we Learn?

Anfield erupted at full time, as it enjoyed three points, relief and the fact it could not longer be tortured by John Brooks. This won’t make any top ten performances of the season highlights, but it felt so important. Having struggled against the ‘big six’ last season, Liverpool are now 2/2 in these contests against a rough to beat Chelsea side. Whilst we enjoyed the chants about their lack of history, they made this a difficult game of which Slot and his men will have been ahoy to come away with three points. We look at the lessons learned from a super Sunday victory at Anfield.

New Dad, New Season Begins For Curtis

He’s very much been on the fringes this season, but Curtis Jones was the man of the match in this one without doubt. His statistics told their own story with 1 goal, 1 penalty won (still unsure about the second one to be honest), 6/8 duels won, 6 ball recoveries, 3/4 tackles won, 90% pass accuracy, 2 key passes and an interception. He was everywhere and as much as Salah’s ball was top class, so was the run. He left the field to a standing ovation and a big hug from Arne Slot. He’s given him real thinking too about the first-choice midfield too. A perfect way to celebrate his daughters birth.

Scousers Impress

We’re used to seeing the threat of Trent Alexander-Arnold and waxing lyrical about it. However, it just wasn’t that type of game for the England left-back as we asked him to do a different job in this one. His defensive play was exceptional and 5 duels won, 4 clearances, 4/4 tackles won, 1 block, 10 defensive actions told their own story. No player on the pitch won more duels, tackles or made more clearances than the vice-captain. The funny thing is, we didn’t really hear too much of that from Carragher, Neville et Al afterwards about it. Funny that.

Honourable Mentions Galore

It’s almost a disgrace we’re not dedicating this whole thing to another Salah goal and assist performance truth be told and the Egyptian king was magnificent again. Darwin Nunez – where did that come from?!?? Not just battling, but game intelligence and the Uruguayan regularly bought us fouls at difficult times. Maybe the most intelligent number nine performance this season. Joe Gomez too was brilliant when he came on. So much so that Neto gave up and tried to get something out of Robertson on the other side. It wasn’t vintage but there were some real performances where the few helped carry the many.
