Matchday 12 of the Liga MX Clausura saw León lose their place at the top of the table with consecutive defeats, whilst Tigres and Cruz Azul sealed important home victories to keep pace with the league leaders.

Attention was on the capital when Sergio Ramos and his Monterrey teammates faced a Pumas side looking to impress under new manager Efraín Juárez.

Here's the full break down of Liga MX Clausura, Matchday 12.

Friday 14th March 2025

Necaxa 2-1 Leon

León dropped to second following a narrow loss to Necaxa. Johan Rojas got the ball rolling for the home side before a red card to Alejandro Andrade gave León the man advantage. Despite this, the league's top goalscorer, Diber Cambindo, scored his 11th of the season to double the lead. Nicolas Larcamón's side stayed compact and held onto a vital three points despite a second-half strike from Jhonder Cadíz.

Querétaro 1-0 Mazatlán

Both sides were reduced to ten men early in the second half but the game was decided much earlier when Rodrigo Bogarin netted the decider in the 24' minute. The win moves Los Gallos up to 12th, three points behind tenth-placed Chivas.

Puebla 0-3 Toluca

Toluca made it eight goals in two games after defeating Necaxa 5-2. A goal and assist for Alexis Vega continues his rich vein of form, whilst Paulinho added his name to the scoresheet, making it eight for the season. Becoming the deadliest team in front of goal, Los Rojos Diablos moved up to fourth in the league, three points off of Club América in top spot.

Tigres 3-0 Santos Laguna

Tigres marked another win under new manager Guido Pizarro, following a quarterfinal berth to the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Los Universitarios pilled on the pain for a Santos side sitting second from the bottom as two own goals, from Emmanuel Echeverria and Edson Gutierrez, put the nail in the coffin for Fernando Ortiz's side.

Cruz Azul 3-0 San Luis

La Máquina also responded to a Champions Cup win midweek with a victory against a struggling side in the Clausura. A double from Angel Sepúlveda set the pace, netting twice in the first 15 minutes before Andrés Montaño scored his first league goal for the club following his move last summer from Mazatlán. Cruz Azul currently find themselves in fifth, five points behind their city rivals at the top.

Juárez 1-1 Chivas

Juárez and Chivas occupy the final spots in the Liguilla, and we may have just had a glimpse into what to expect in the Play-In competition. It was a closely contested battle, the ball swung in favour of Los Bravos first. Angel Zaldivar gave the hosts an early lead before Miguel Gomez ensured a point for Chivas on the road.

Atlas 1-3 Club América

It was as close to a perfect week for América, after knocking Chivas out of the Champions Cup and now climbing to the top of the tree. Las Águilas went two to the good at the Estadio Jalisco when Rodrigo Aguirre and Cristian Calderon netted twice in the first five minutes of the second half. Atlas came from three goals down to beat Tijuana last week and had a chance at another comeback when Uros Djurdjevic added to his hattrick from last week, but hopes were crushed with 15 minutes left when Aguirre got his second of the match.

Pumas 1-3 Monterrey

Monterrey joined Chivas as the two Mexican sides dumped from the Champions Cup in midweek, losing to the Vancouver Whitecaps. That meant that Martín Demichelis' side were out for revenge and they took it out on a Pumas side returning from Costa Rica, where they beat Alajuelense in the continental competition. Meeting in the capital, Los Rayados took to a three-goal lead whilst Pumas had three of their own ruled out for offside and a Guillermo Martínez foul on Esteban Andrade before eventually getting on the scoresheet in added time when the forward converted from the penalty spot. All before Sergio Ramos received a straight red card for a nonsense lash-out on the Pumas goalscorer at the end of the game.

Pachuca recorded a first win in three matches after draws against Juárez and Mazatlán. The result keeps them in seventh with four different goalscorers on target as Los Xolos, who reached the Apertura playoffs, find themselves rooted to the bottom of the league.
