Liverpool’s Dominance Over Spurs: Key Lessons from Carabao Cup Semifinal

It’s a case of planes, trains and automobiles as everyone prepares for their trips in March to Anfield South. A Liverbird upon my chest rang out on numerous occasions in this game and understandably as the reds were dominant from minute one onwards. Spurs were quite often suffocated in their own half and Kelleher must have wondered if Slot did actually start him, such was his inactivity. There was so much too like, some familiar goal scorers and assisters, plus a good night for the second string. We look at the lessons learned from a Carabao Cup semi-final victory.

Witnessing Greatness

When you actually say it out loud it’s outrageous really. That was Mo Salah’s 26th goal of the season already and the Egyptian King now has 44 goals contributions overall. His assist owed an element of fortune to it as somehow no-one managed to touch us before Gakpo buried his half-volley. However, that’s two penalties in two games that he’s finished well and two keepers wouldn’t have kept it out the top left corner. It’s almost becoming normal to talk about these goal and assist games for Salah and to think that a short while ago people were suggesting it was a mini blip from him.

Chief Support Again

There’s little doubt who the main man is, but Cody Gakpo has well and truly established himself as Liverpool’s first choice left-winger now. However oddly it arrived at his right foot, the Dutch attacker despatched his half-volley with aplomb past Kinsky. That’s 16 goals in all competitions and 21 goal contributions for the season now. Gakpo has also netted 10 goals in his last 10 games at Anfield, as well as becoming the outright top scorer in this competition. He was rightly brought off to a great reception and it’s Salah, him and one more just now in this starting line-up.

Don’t Forget Darwin

He didn’t get himself on the scoresheet in this one, but there was little doubt on t(e overall Impact that Darwin Nunez had on this game. For a start, the Uruguayan made numerous defensive clearances from Spurs set-pieces and won the back back on umpteen occasions. Going forward he linked well with Salah, ran the channels well and was often tidy and secure in possession. He left the pitch to chants of ‘Nunez, Nunez, Nunez’ and it was completely deserved. He’s getting good at winning these penalties at the moment too.
