Arne Slot has said everyone at Liverpool is ‘disappointed’ that Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave the club this summer.
Alexander-Arnold has confirmed his intention to depart when his contract expires at the end of the campaign. The 26-year-old is expected to sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer.
The decision has been met by a mixed reaction from the fanbase, with some unhappy with the right-back’s choice to leave for free. Slot said he is ‘not here to tell the fans how to react’ but admits everyone at Anfield is disappointed to lose a ‘very good player’ and ‘good human’.
“I think like everybody who likes Liverpool and is a fan of us, we are disappointed he is leaving,” Slot said at his press conference this morning.
“A good human is leaving but also a very good full-back is leaving us.
“I also worked at clubs like AZ and Feyenoord where every season a very good player leaves the club. So I am more used to it. The experience I have and this club as well, if a very good player is leaving, the next very good player is stepping up. That is what is probably happening again.
“Do you know where Trent is going? He hasn’t said anything, just that he will leave, so it is impossible to comment if he will play in the Club World Cup. You see by my smile, we both know where he is going to!
“People have an opinion, Trent, me or anyone, nothing new. Maybe a bit more negative than he is used to. I am not here to tell the fans how to react.
“The boys had a few days off, so I will wait and see how he feels. I have spoken to him on WhatsApp but let’s wait and see. I am not here to tell the fans how to react.
“Trent said that us, as a team and club, not to be too distracted by this announcement, so I hope all the energy goes to the players, the fans and as less as possible to Trent, unless it is positive.”
