Liverpool FC Women have officially announced the departure of Matt Beard, ending his influential three-and-a-half-year tenure as manager. This marks the conclusion of Beard’s second spell with the club, a period that brought significant highs and a recent challenging season in the Women’s Super League (WSL).
Beard’s association with Liverpool has been a rollercoaster of emotions and achievements. During his first stint from 2012 to 2015, he was instrumental in capturing two WSL titles, establishing Liverpool as a powerhouse in women’s football. His return to the club in 2021 heralded a new era of optimism, culminating in a triumphant promotion back to the WSL in his initial season.
However, the current campaign has been less favourable, with Liverpool FC Women finding themselves in seventh place in the league. The team’s recent performance, a 4-0 defeat against Manchester City on February 16, turned out to be Beard’s last match in charge.
In a heartfelt statement, Liverpool expressed deep gratitude towards Beard: “We have all experienced some fantastic moments with Matt as manager of LFC Women and we express our gratitude for his significant contribution.” This sentiment underscores the club’s recognition of Beard’s pivotal role in their recent history.
The club’s statement also highlighted their ambitions: “Our priority was to return this team to where it belongs and we collectively achieved that in 2022 by winning promotion to the WSL. We need to build on that momentum and although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for future success on the pitch.”
In the wake of Beard’s departure, Liverpool have moved quickly to appoint Amber Whiteley as the interim manager. This transition is aimed at stabilising the team and maintaining their competitive presence in the WSL as they navigate through the remainder of the season.

As Liverpool FC Women look to the future, the focus will be on building from the foundations laid during Beard’s tenure. The mid-table position is not where a club of Liverpool’s stature aims to be, indicating that there’s substantial work to be done. The appointment of a full-time manager will be crucial in defining the path forward and ensuring the team not only competes but excels in the increasingly competitive landscape of women’s football.
In conclusion, Matt Beard’s time at Liverpool will be remembered for his dedication and the heights the club reached under his guidance. As Liverpool FC Women enter a new chapter, the lessons learned under Beard’s management will undoubtedly influence their approach moving forward. The task at hand will be to harness the potential of this talented squad and climb back to the top echelons of the WSL, honouring Beard’s legacy by aiming for nothing less than excellence.
