Liverpool facing spell without three defenders

Arne Slot has injury problems to contend with but it is doing little to slow Liverpool’s flying run of form.

The Reds beat Manchester City on Sunday to make it 18 wins out of 20 in all competitions under the Dutchman, leaving them nine points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool were without defensive trio Ibrahima Konate, Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas for that win, but Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harvey Elliott did return from their own injury problems to bolster Slot’s options.

Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa have been longer-time absentees, while Alisson is close to presenting Slot with a selection headache in goal.

Ibrahima Konate

Ibrahima Konate missed the win over Man City on Sunday after picking up a knee injury against Real Madrid in midweek.

The defender posted on social media last week that he had started the “recovery process” and speaking after his side beat City, Slot confirmed that both Konate and Conor Bradley face a spell on the sidelines.

"They will both be out for a few weeks,” Slot said.

“I have said many times before, it's always difficult to judge how many weeks this exactly is because you can think in the beginning it'll be like this and then the end stage of an injury process can always differ a bit.

"They will not be in the team this week, for sure, both of them.”

Potential return date: Early January 2025

Diogo Jota

Diogo Jota has not played since he picked up a chest injury against Chelsea six weeks ago.

It was initially suggested that the forward would return after last month’s international break, but Jota has not been fit enough to make a matchday squad.

Speaking ahead of last week’s match against Real Madrid, Slot said Jota was “not there yet” in terms of being available.

Potential return date: Late December 2024

Kostas Tsimikas

Kostas Tsimikas recently picked up an ankle injury in training and has since missed matches against Southampton, Real Madrid and Man City.

The left-back was in attendance to watch Liverpool beat City at Anfield on crutches and with a protective boot on his right foot, suggesting his return is not imminent.

“I don't think Kostas will be with us in the upcoming week,” Slot said on Sunday.

Potential return date: Unknown

Alisson Becker

It has now been two months on the sidelines for goalkeeper Alisson, having suffered a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace in October.

The Brazilian has returned to training but Liverpool are being patient with his fitness, particularly with Caoimhin Kelleher in impressive form.

Alisson is believed to be close to being available, though, and could be back in the squad this week.

Conor Bradley

Conor Bradley was forced off late against Real Madrid with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Initial reports claimed that Bradley’s injury was not as serious as Konate’s, with the right-back potentially missing up to a month, but Slot’s update on Sunday stated only that Liverpool would be without the Northern Irishman for “a few weeks”.

Potential return date: Late December 2024

Federico Chiesa

Summer signing Federico Chiesa has played only 18 minutes of Premier League football this season.

He has not featured for Liverpool since September, but Slot revealed last week that Chiesa is stepping up his fitness.

The Liverpool said: “Federico is not in the squad yet. He is training with us, not the whole session, but mostly one or two parts of the session.”

Potential return date: Unknown
