Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has voiced his disappointment over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid after opting not to renew his contract, which is set to expire at the end of the season.

The Anfield faithful are understandably frustrated, but Carragher’s concern appears to be more about the manner in which the move has unfolded rather than the move itself.

Carragher believes that Alexander-Arnold’s departure, especially as a local player who grew up supporting Liverpool, feels like a letdown.

“There doesn’t seem to be one thing that people are unhappy with, whether it’s that he’s leaving for free or that he should have told the club earlier. People are angry about three or four different things,” he began saying.

Carragher is disappointed

Liverpool are a club that consistently competes for top honours in the Premier League and Champions League, so for a boyhood fan and homegrown talent to leave for Real Madrid raises questions about his belief in the club’s future.

From Carragher’s perspective, it’s disappointing that Alexander-Arnold doesn’t seem to share the same vision for Liverpool’s success.

“I’m not angry that he’s leaving for free. My point is, as a local player and a Reds fan, Liverpool are in a position where they compete for the Premier League and the European Cup every year.

“So if you’re a Liverpool fan and a local player, I’m disappointed that he doesn’t think this is the way it is.”

Asking for improvement

Carragher also addressed the challenges Alexander-Arnold will face at Real Madrid, particularly in La Liga, which is known for its tactical and defensive demands.

The right-back has often been criticised for his defensive performances, and Carragher warned that Real Madrid’s high expectations will place significant pressure on him.

“If you play in the quarterfinals against Bayern Munich and let your team down with a couple of goals conceded, the pressure is going to increase,” he said.

Real Madrid’s ambitions are relentless, and Alexander-Arnold will have to improve his defensive capabilities to thrive at such a demanding club.

Mistakes in crucial matches will be heavily scrutinised, and everyone expects that the right-back will arrive at the club knowing all the possibilities.
