Liverpool’s hunt for a new left-back continues, and Ajax’s Jorrel Hato is a name generating significant interest. Discussed at length by Dr Phil Barts and Dave Davis on the Anfield Index podcast, Hato’s profile offers versatility and raw potential that could fit perfectly into Arne Slot’s Liverpool project.
One of Hato’s standout traits is his ability to play both left-back and centre-back, a rare quality that makes him highly valuable in modern football. Dr Phil Barts noted, “He’s almost a unicorn in that sense. He can play both positions and perform well in each.”
Liverpool’s defensive strategy under Slot requires flexibility. Hato’s capability to switch between roles offers tactical options, particularly in games where Liverpool may need to shift between a back four and a back three.
Barts pointed out that the club has previously looked for players with similar profiles. “In the summer, we were looking at Levi Colwill for that same reason,” he explained. Hato, at just 19 years old, offers a long-term solution with room to develop further.
Despite his young age, Hato’s defensive metrics are promising. He’s strong in aerial duels, which has been a key concern for Liverpool’s recruitment team. “He’s in the 86th percentile for aerials,” said Barts. “That’s exactly what you want to see from a young player.”
In addition to his aerial prowess, Hato is proactive in winning tackles and making progressive passes. His passing accuracy is also a major strength, with Barts highlighting, “He’s in the 98th percentile for passes attempted and completed.”
For a team like Liverpool, which prioritises possession and progressive play, Hato’s passing stats suggest he could slot seamlessly into their system. “He’s not just playing safe passes. He’s breaking lines and making progressive moves,” Barts added.

While Hato is still developing, his potential is undeniable. His raw attributes, combined with Arne Slot’s reputation for player development, make him a strong candidate for Liverpool’s future.
Slot’s impact at Liverpool has already been seen with players like Ryan Gravenberch, who has thrived since his arrival. “Slot clearly knows how to develop players,” said Barts. “He works closely with them and helps them improve.”
This ability to nurture talent makes Hato an exciting prospect. His current weaknesses, such as progressive carries, can be ironed out with the right coaching. As Davis put it, “There’s a lot of raw material here. He’s not the finished product, but he’s got all the tools.”
Dr Phil Barts believes that Liverpool need to act fast if they want to secure Hato’s services. “If you don’t get him now, someone else will,” he warned. With Virgil van Dijk known to be a fan of Hato, the Dutch connection could play a role in convincing the young defender to join Liverpool.
Ajax, known for their development and selling model, are likely to be open to a deal. “Ajax are a selling club,” said Barts. “If Liverpool make the right offer, they’ll be willing to do business.”
The challenge, however, will be Hato’s price tag. As Davis pointed out, “He won’t be cheap, but he’s worth it. Players who can cover two positions at a high level are rare.”
Jorrel Hato represents a smart, forward-thinking signing for Liverpool. His versatility, strong defensive metrics, and potential to grow under Arne Slot’s management make him a compelling option for the club.
“Liverpool need a left-back who can defend first and foremost,” said Dr Phil Barts. “Hato has that, plus the potential to become even better.”
With both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas approaching the later stages of their careers at Liverpool, securing a young, versatile defender like Hato would be a prudent move. As Davis summarised, “There’s a lot to like about this kid. He ticks many boxes for what Liverpool need.”
