Liverpool may strike if Brighton drop asking price for key player

Liverpool are among several Premier League clubs monitoring Kaoru Mitoma, with a summer transfer move under consideration, according to a report from TeamTalk. The 27-year-old winger has attracted growing attention following another solid season with Brighton, during which he has recorded eight goals and three assists despite the Seagulls’ mixed campaign under Fabian Hürzeler.
Mitoma, who is under contract until 2027, remains a key figure in Brighton’s system. However, with the club at risk of missing out on European football, there is an increasing possibility they could be open to selling—particularly given the high value they’ve placed on the Japan international.

Sources told TeamTalk: “Brighton will consider big Kaoru Mitoma sale,” with the South Coast side now demanding £80m for the dynamic winger.
Mitoma was subject to interest from Al-Nassr during the January window, who tabled offers of £54m and £61m. Both were turned down, though TeamTalk report that the player “was interested in the move.” With Al-Nassr maintaining contact with Mitoma’s representatives, a fresh bid from Saudi Arabia remains a possibility.

That presents a financial challenge for Liverpool, who are not in a position to match the wage structures offered by Saudi Pro League clubs. However, the prospect of linking up with Mohamed Salah, who recently signed a contract extension, may offer a sporting incentive for Mitoma should Liverpool’s interest advance.
Mitoma’s preferred position on the left would place him in direct competition with Luis Díaz and Cody Gakpo. However, the uncertainty surrounding Díaz’s future—given reported interest from Barcelona and other top European sides—could create space in the squad for a new arrival.
Liverpool are also reportedly exploring a deal for Alexander Isak, though the £150m valuation placed on the Newcastle striker suggests that other potential signings, including Mitoma, must be carefully assessed for financial viability.
Brighton’s track record of selling players at peak value suggests a deal is plausible—provided their valuation is met. With Mitoma entering the final two years of his contract, and Brighton unlikely to offer an extension, the club may be ready to cash in.
Firstly, the £80m valuation feels excessive for a player who, while undoubtedly talented, hasn’t consistently delivered elite numbers over a full season. With only eight goals and three assists to his name, it’s fair to question whether he represents value at that fee.
Moreover, competition on the left side is already fierce. Luis Díaz may be linked with a move away, but he remains a popular figure among supporters and hasn’t shown signs of decline. Gakpo offers flexibility across the front line, and the club already have younger wide options emerging.
Financially, Liverpool will need to be strategic. If the club genuinely have eyes on Alexander Isak at £150m, it’s unlikely that both he and Mitoma can be acquired without significant outgoings. And with Saudi clubs hovering with huge wage offers, Liverpool may find themselves priced out unless Mitoma prioritises competitive football over financial gain.
He’s a good player—technically gifted, fast, and clever—but whether he’s the right player at the right price is still up for debate.
