Liverpool’s history of developing youth talent is infamous.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold being the current major success story in the team, and youngsters Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley all getting significant minutes in the team so far this season, that legacy will continue.
Recently, the Reds were linked to 17-year-old Sunderland wonderkid Chris Rigg. Rigg has played three games so far this season for the Sunderland first-team, scoring the winner against Middlesborough last weekend.
It is now being reported that League One Birmingham City are eyeing an ambitious bid for Rigg despite being in the division below Sunderland.
The move would come as part of a rejuvenation project for the Midlands side as they play their first season in the third tier of English Football for the first time since 1991-92. The side were bought by Shelby Companies Ltd., a subsidiary of the American firm Knightshead Capital Management, and fronted by owner Tom Wagner.
Legendary NFL Quarterback Tom Brady also became a minority owner, allowing the club to receive further media exposure and attention. Their game against current-second placed side Wrexham - who are notoriously owned by American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and seeking their third promotion in as many seasons - was broadcast live on Sky Sports.
The move for Rigg would follow Birmingham’s £15m signing of striker Jay Stansfield being the most expensive League One transfer of all time, smashing Sunderland’s signing of striker Will Grigg from Wigan for £3.4m in 2019.
Liverpool are one of several Premier League teams interested in Rigg. Naturally, a move to the Premier League would bear significant fruit for the youngster, although undoubtedly he will get more immediate playing time if he were to accept the move to Birmingham. Only time will tell on what the youngster has in store for English football.
