Croatia captain and midfielder Luka Modric has been critical of referee Daniele Orsato, who was in-charge of the World Cup semi-final involving Argentina and Croatia yesterday.
Modric played what was his last ever World Cup game yesterday, as Lionel Messi’s Argentina picked up a 3-0 win and reached their second final in three editions.
After the game, Modric spoke to the press and he gave his views about referee Orsato and criticised him – just like Messi had slammed Antonio Lahoz after his side’s penalty shootout win over Netherlands. Modric was critical about the fact that Orsato gave Argentina a penalty.
He said (via La Repubblica): “We were controlling the match well, when the key episode came. There was a corner for us, which the referee didn’t give, and during the next play there was a penalty, which was absolutely not one, because it was Alvarez who sought contact with our goalkeeper Livakovic and not vice versa. I wonder how such a penalty can be called.
“However, it has now happened and we can’t do anything about it anymore. Usually I don’t talk about the referees, but today it is impossible not to do it. He is one of the worst I know and I haven’t said it since today, it’s a disaster. Despite that, congratulations Argentina.”
