Manchester United spent more than £180 million on five high-profile signings this summer.

A midfielder was one of the top priorities, and they eventually signed Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain on transfer deadline day.

The club will likely reinforce their midfield next year, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen expected for the exit door.

Casemiro is no longer in the prime of his career and has shown signs of regression. He could be offloaded amid interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Eriksen has impressed with his creativity in recent games, but he will be 33 in February and could leave when his contract expires in June.

The United hierarchy must plan in advance, and they should consider re-signing Angel Gomes from Lille on a free transfer.

Gomes left the Red Devils for Lille on a Bosman deal four years ago, and he has since progressed into one of the most sought-after midfielders in Ligue 1.

The 24-year-old can play as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder and he showed his class for England in the Nations League last night.

The Red Devils graduate was sensational against Finland with 108 touches and a passing accuracy of 97 percent from central midfield.

He lost possession on only three occasions and provided a wonderful assist for Jack Grealish’s opener.

Gomes’ current deal with Lille expires in June 2025, and United will have the option to discuss a pre-contract over a free transfer at the turn of the year.

It appears a no-brainer decision to sign him, given he is just entering the prime of his career and would be a huge bargain acquisition for no transfer fee.

Gomes has already opened the door for an ‘amazing‘ reunion but will ask for big wages.

He earns £11,400 per week at Les Dogues but will probably ask for £100,000 weekly and a hefty signing-on fee to return to Old Trafford.
