Manchester United are interested in signing former Chelsea centre-back Andreas Christensen during the January transfer window, according to Mundo Deportivo.
However, the Red Devils face stiff competition from Italian giants Juventus and Inter Milan for the Danish defender’s signature.
Juventus are particularly motivated to secure a new defender due to long-term injuries to Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal. They could be United’s main rivals in the pursuit of Christensen.
Despite having an array of options in central defence, United’s tactical set-up under manager Ruben Amorim may explain their interest.
His preference for a three-man central defensive system could necessitate additional reinforcements in that department.
Jonny Evans is nearing the end of his current contract and could leave for free next summer, while Victor Lindelof has dealt with persistent injury concerns.
Christensen has recently returned to training after an injury that sidelined him since the opening matchday of La Liga. The 28-year-old is now reportedly fit and ready to feature for Barcelona.
The Danish international’s experience in the Premier League would allow him to adapt quickly at Old Trafford.
His familiarity with a three-man defence – honed under Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea – makes him an ideal fit for Amorim’s tactical system.
Another attractive quality is Christensen’s versatility. While primarily a centre-back, he has demonstrated his ability to operate as a defensive midfielder.
At Barcelona, he has played in midfield on 16 occasions, registering three goals and one assist.
Christensen is a ball-playing defender, ranking in the 91st percentile for passes completed.
His proficiency in aerial duels is equally impressive and could significantly strengthen United’s ability to defend set-pieces, an area of concern this season.
However, the Dane’s lack of pace is a potential vulnerability, especially in defensive transitions. A three-man defensive set-up could mitigate this weakness effectively.
While Christensen’s attributes make him a strong candidate, addressing weaknesses in other areas of the squad could take precedence, making a move for him unlikely at this stage.
