Manchester United U21s were knocked out of the National League Cup on Tuesday evening, losing 3-0 at National League side Sutton United.
Coach Travis Binnion was without some key players due to their involvement with the first team, while some left on loan last month.
Player-coach Tommy Rowe had United’s first chance of the game, pouncing on a loose ball, but his effort drifted wide off the right post.
Jack Moorhouse had the opportunity to open the scoring afterwards, beating his marker before forcing goalkeeper Jack Sims to make his first save of the game.
Four minutes before the half-hour mark, Amir Ibragimov nearly gave United the lead, unleashing a powerful strike which cannoned off the right post.
Sutton opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Tyler French teed up Finley Barbrook, who struck the ball into the bottom left corner.
Man United continued to push for the equaliser at the start of the second half, with Ibragimov setting up Jim Thwaite, whose shot was comfortably saved by Sims.
United were forced to make a change as Finley McAllister picked up an injury and was replaced by Samuel Lusale.
Ibragimov came close to restoring parity for United afterwards, but a late clearance prevented his effort from scoring.
Rowe was the next to try to bring the away side back on level terms when he received a pass from Kone but he could only drag his effort wide.
Sutton doubled their advantage against the run of play after 65 minutes as Nana Boateng put the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Will Murdock.
The National League side extended their lead four minutes later, launching a long ball that United’s backline failed to clear, allowing Jack Wadham to score.
