Manchester United suffered a brutal loss on Sunday, losing 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. Moreover, the Red Devils are being criticized for the hundreds of millions spent, including buying former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
This past summer, PSG sold Ugarte to Manchester United for a reported €50 million, with another €10 million possible in add-ons and a 10 percent sell-on clause.
Despite the money spent, manager Erik ten Hag and his team are 12th in the Premier League table with seven points in six points. Following the loss to Spurs, a talkSPORT slammed the Dutch manager for the money he’s spent and no results to show.
“When you’re spending hundreds of millions of pounds, you still got to find a way,” Scott Minto said Sunday on talkSPORT. “They spent a lot of money and it’s just not happening.”
Ugarte faces criticism following the Red Devils’ lackluster performance in their UEFA Europa League Matchday 1, where they drew 1-1 against FC Twente at Old Trafford.
Last week, football journalist Andy Mitten pointed out that fans should give the Uruguayan some time to adjust and find his rhythm, as it’s unrealistic to expect him to hit the ground running right away.
“He’s only just arrived, and I think he should be given time,” Mitten said on talkSPORT. “He’s moving to play in another country…What are some people expecting? The new Roy Keane just to come in and start smashing it.
“Some of Manchester United’s greatest players, people who’ve become world-class players, have needed time to settle in. And I don’t think he’s actually done particularly badly. He’s just not been the new Zidane, which he was never going to be. Players need time to settle. It’s a very tough league to play in.”
