The Red Devils don’t have much to play for in the Premier League this season, stuck in 13th after 30 games. They recently saw a four-game unbeaten run come to an end at the hands of Nottingham Forest.

It leaves Man Utd seven points outside the top half and on course for their worst-ever Premier League finish — again.

But they could do the league double over Man City for the first time since 2019-20, and would hope to dent their rivals’ top four hopes.

Man Utd team news vs Man City

Man Utd will have had four full days of recovery and training by the time they wake up on Sunday, so we could see an unchanged XI from Ruben Amorim — even though the Red Devils did lose to Nottingham Forest in midweek.

The Red Devils don’t have the squad depth or quality on the bench to make changes to their XI that would improve ahead of the weekend. Harry Maguire did make a return from injury late on against Fulham, but he was also brought on as a makeshift striker.

Leny Yoro is likely to be favoured, with Maguire not at full fitness just yet, especially against an attack like Man City’s — even if they are without the injured Erling Haaland.

Joshua Zirkzee looks to be first-choice over Rasmus Hojlund to lead the line at the moment too, with the Dane still struggling for form and confidence. Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho should play behind Zirkzee, with Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte the two holding midfielders.

Kobbie Mainoo as closing in on a return but this game will still be too soon, while Luke Shaw and Ayden Heaven are also out — but expected to be back before the season is up.

There has been positive news recently surrounding Amad Diallo and he may be back before the season ends. Jonny Evans remains out, while Lisandro Martinez isn’t expected to feature again this year.

Bruno Fernandes chasing Old Trafford glory

There aren’t many Man Utd players who can hold their head high this season. But Fernandes has definitely done his best to drag the Red Devils at time.

The Man Utd captain has been directly involved in 21 goals at Old Trafford across all competitions this season, scoring 12 and providing nine assists. Of those 21 goal involvements, 10 have come in the Premier League, more than any other Man Utd player. Fernandes has scored five goals and provided five league assists at Old Trafford, again the most for Man Utd.

And now he’s looking to cement his place in Man Utd history. Should Fernandes provide an assist on Sunday, it’d be the third time he’s hit double figures for both goals and assists in a season at Old Trafford. The Portuguese midfielder also achieved the feat in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

In the Premier League era, only two players have hit double figures for both goals and assists at Old Trafford in a single season. And they only achieved the feat once. The first was Dwight Yorke in 1998-99, before Cristiano Ronaldo unsurprisingly achieved it in 2006-07. So one more assist would have Fernandes achieve the feat more times than all other players combined since 1992-93.
