Manchester City are hopeful of agreeing a deal to sign Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan after expressing initial interest in the midfielder.
Pep Guardiola is stepping up plans to overhaul a Manchester City midfield that has struggled during periods of the campaign. Kevin De Bruyne will leave the Etihad in the summer, while Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva could also depart.
Reijnders is being targeted to bolster the engine room after an excellent campaign with Milan. The Dutch international has been an impressive performer in an otherwise challenging season for Milan.
Reijnders has scored 15 goals in all competitions and provided five assists, while he ranks in the top 5% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for non-penalty goals, shots and progressive carries per 90 minutes.
The Italian side are reluctant to sell the 26-year-old, though look set to miss out on Champions League qualification.
Discussions are understood to be at an early stage. The Athletic are reporting that Manchester City’s pursuit Reijnders is independent of interest in Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.
The Citizens want to sign a number eight and at least one number 10 during the summer transfer window.
