The visitors were ahead inside quarter of an hour at a sold-out Kingsmeadow Stadium, Erin Cuthbert losing the ball to Jess Park who played in Khadija Shaw to flick it past keeper Hannah Hampton.

Park and Shaw combined again but Hannah Hampton made a good save to deny the latter, while at the other end Mayra Ramirez had a penalty appeal turned down when challenged by Alex Greenwood.

Khiara Keating tipped away a Fran Kirby effort at the end of a sweeping Chelsea move, Cuthbert then had a 20-yard strike brush the top of the bar on its way over.

Into the last 20 minutes and Hampton made a sharp stop from a Chloe Kelly shot to keep Chelsea in the game.

Cuthbert saw her strike fly narrowly wide, Keating made a double-save from Jelena Čanković and Sjoeke Nüsken in stoppage time.

City continued to hold out for the win, Chelsea only remaining top by virtue of goals scored.
