It now appears that Manchester City’s deadline day transfer target is FC Porto midfielder Nico Gonzàlez. The Spanish youth international does appear to be the perfect type of player to bolster City’s ageing midfield. There have now been two new reports that indicate that the world champions are continuing negotiations with FC Porto to sign Nico Gonzàlez. It now appears that it could be a race against time for Manchester City to sign the player they so desperately need.
Fabrizio Romano has reported via X that Manchester City have made direct contact with FC Porto in regards to signing Nico Gonzàlez. Furthermore, Romano reports that there is no issue on personal terms between Gonzàlez and City. Romano also reports that FC Porto is insisting that the release clause in Gonzàlez’s contract is met.
David Ornstein and Sam Lee have reported for the Athletic that Manchester City are attempting to complete a move for Nico Gonzàlez. Furthermore, the Athletic report states that there is no agreement between the two clubs over Gonzàlez. Lee and Ornstein add that there is no guarantee that one will be found. Lastly, the Athletic report states that the FC Porto midfielder is high on City’s list of midfield targets. Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz is also named as a potential City target.
Based on the two new reports we now have confirmation of Manchester City’s deadline day target. That is FC Porto midfielder Nico Gonzàlez. Based on his talent and potential it’s clear to see why City would want to sign the Spanish midfielder. With his ability to play in multiple positions in midfield and his workrate on both sides of the ball he would immediately improve City’s midfield. But the question now is can Manchester City complete a deal for Gonzàlez before the transfer window closes?
That’s the question at hand currently. It doesn’t seem that FC Porto are going to budge on their asking price for Gonzàlez. So the ball is now in Manchester City’s court. They either pay the release clause or they don’t sign a midfielder this month. That appears to be the two choices. Not signing a midfielder would be risky move by the Manchester City hierachy. It’s actually a position that they shouldn’t find themselves in so late in the window. But that’s where it all stands and now we wait to see if Manchester City can find an agreement with FC Porto to sign the Spanish midfielder.
It does appear that Manchester City’s move for Nico Gonzàlez is a developing story. What happens next isn’t immediately clear but with Nico Gonzàlez appearing to want to move to the Etihad it’s now on Manchester City to complete the deal to sign him. What it looks like going forward if they don’t isn’t a thought anyone associated with Manchester City wants to contemplate.
