Manchester United fans have seen their team struggle all season.

No joy in the domestic cups and woeful in the Premier League.

Man U currently in 13th and will drop at least one place if losing on Sunday at St James’ Park, whilst if Spurs avoid defeat at Wolves, Manchester United fans would see their team drop to 15th.

Ironically, whilst Man U and Spurs are fighting it out for 15th in the Premier League, they are both in the Europa League quarter-finals.

This pair of teams perfectly summing up how weakened the Europa League is now, due to the expansion of the Champions League and the fact no Champions League sides drop into this secondary competition.

As you can see below in the comments from Manchester United fans, only one upcoming match is of importance to them AND that they believe they have a hope of winning, it is not this game on Sunday against Newcastle United.

Manchester United fans giving their views ahead of the Newcastle United match, commenting via their Red Cafe message board:

‘This is an obvious 3-0 loss… Honestly don’t care about this match in the slightest. Just make sure that nobody gets hurt or tired for the Lyon game. This means nothing.’

‘Worried we could get a hammering. Short turnaround and nothing to play for vs a side in good form with a week’s rest and lots to play for.’

‘Play Onana, Hojlund and the reserves.

Europe takes preference now.’

‘Nobody is bothered about this match.’

‘The priority should obviously be the Europa, but I’d start Bayindir to see what level he’s at after all the time he’s been out.’

‘Rotate to the max here if we can, All eggs have to be in Thursdays basket. Give Mainoo / Mount / Shaw minutes.’

‘They’re in good form and have it all to play for.

I’d back Isak to get a couple.’

‘They’re in good form and have it all to play for.

I’d back Isak to get a couple.’

‘Yeah bayindir has to play. Get him up to speed and show Onana that it’s generally not good for your chances if you keep giving the other team goals’

‘Nothing game for us. Expecting a loss. Don’t care once players are fit for Lyon.’

‘They’re going to be out for blood, still pushing for a CL spot and we can’t risk injuries. I’d not blame Ruben for a lot of rotation here, even if it ended up in a bit of a beating. Too much at stake next Thursday.’

‘1-1 with a backs to the wall performance. A defender will be MOTM for us’

‘Got to start Bayindir in this one, we need to take a look at an alternative to Onana and have a serious think about it.

Shaw, Mainoo and Mount all need starts as well as Eriksen, Lindelof, Amas. Rest as many as possible for Thursday night.’

‘Meh match, start fellas that won’t or shouldn’t be starting the 2nd leg v Lyon. So Onana in goal and work from there.’

‘I would rotate massively for this game.

Even if we play our best XI we would have lost. We have nothing to play, not even pride.

Except Dalot and Maguire and maybe Ugarte, I would start no one next Thursday.’

‘Can’t see anything other than a loss.’

‘If we were good I’d think we should rest players, but we’re not. I think these guys need as much time as possible on the pitch together and don’t seem that jaded. League position is still very valuable in terms of prize money and it’s very tight.’

‘We won’t score. 0-0 or 1-0 loss.’

‘He will never do it but I’d start Lindelof, Hojlund, Garnacho, Eriksen, Onana and everybody else who shouldn’t start for the Lyon 2nd league to avoid injuries but he’s keen to build up the winning spirit, hope it doesn’t come back to bite us.’

‘This was total xG over last 2 games at St. James’s Park: Newcastle 6.23 – 0.75 United. They dominated us in both games and should’ve won much more than 2-0 and 1-0. Ten Hag really struggled there (though he did at most places). Will be difficult to stop them this time as well.

Not sure there will be too much of rotation. Good result at Newcastle would be nice for confidence before Lyon (like 2nd half performance vs Arsenal was for 2nd leg vs Sociedad).’

‘Should be an easy win for Newcastle. Let’s not make it easier for them by starting Onana and Hojlund please.’

‘Could be nasty. They need the points and have Europe to play for. Plus, well rested and in good form.’

‘I was hoping for a cup win hangover for these lot, the season was kind of wrapped up for them, but seeing that they have the Champions League to qualify for. I guess they’ll be up for it.

I cannot explain my irrational hatred of Newcastle. I’m glad they beat Liverpool, but if they as a club were to cease to exist, I wouldn’t miss them.

That being said, they’ll beat us 2-0 sadly.’

‘Get Bayindir in and provided he does ok, keep him in for Lyon return leg.

Try a couple of kids in place of the worst 1st team underperformers. Obi in for Hojlund. Moorhouse/Scanlon/Mantato in for Garnacho.

If the result is we lose and it hurts City and Chelsea’s chances of top 4, oh dear oh well.’

‘Could a loss be a win? If we go on to win the Europa and the Geordies finish above City then yes I suppose. Would rather we win and City lose their own games though.’

‘Think this is a loss sadly. Newcastle are a terrible matchup for us with how athletically superior they are, and they have an absolute gunman to punish any mistakes we might make.’

‘It wasn’t long ago that I was debating with fans who thought that we have a better team than them.’

‘Christ really? It’s not really close, their midfield runs over ours and they have plenty of goal threats along with possibly the best striker world currently.

We are probably a bit better defensively right now but we are so inept in the final third that it’s hard for me to say we are definitively better than anyone, much less Newcastle.’

‘It’s not that far away. We have a selection of defenders better than anything they can conjure up, and Bruno is a better player than any one of their midfielders.

They have Isak, Bruno G, Tonali and I would be hoping we would bring in better than Gordon and Joelinton in the summer. 3 top class players and 2 very good ones.

We have a few players that are very underrated because of how bad we have been previously. Mazroui, de Ligt, Yoro, Bruno are top drawer and we have much, much better young players than them. Players like Zirkzee, Mount and Dorgu have a lot more to give too.

A summer with 3 quality recruits, and we are comfortably ahead of them again.’

‘Our squad is looking a lot healthier with the returning players so I’d use this match to build up a bit of fitness for some players or give them a chance to get a place for the Thursday game. Shaw, Eriksen, Lindelof, Mainoo, Mount, Bayindir, Zirkzee (although surely he must be ahead of Hojlund for the Lyon match now?) – all should be considered.

I think Lyon still have their eye on top 3 in their league so hopefully they’ll play their first team on Sunday.’

‘Newcastle will be fired up for this, after winning the League Cup and with a real chance of securing a Champions League place for next season.

They’re at home and their game in hand might help relieve any pressure to get the win.

Couple this with Amorim rotating players, with an eye on Thursday night and I can’t see anything but a Newcastle victory.

I’d prefer us to win, or at least get a draw, but I’ve now become numb to us losing, especially when it’s the generally expected outcome.’

‘Expecting a heavy defeat. They are a far better side than us.’
