Manchester United fans had seen their team lose in four of the last five times they’d faced Newcastle United.
Make that now five defeats in the last six.
The last two seasons at St James’ Park, Manchester United fans seeing their side lucky to lose only 2-0 and 1-0.
Fortunate to be level at half-time, they had used all their luck up by that point, Newcastle United going on to turn the pressure up and totally dominate the second 45, Man U losing 4-1 and it could/should have been more.
Manchester United fans giving their views after the 4-1 thrashing by Newcastle United, commenting via their Red Cafe message board:
‘I’m not even surprised or angry with this anymore.’
‘Words fail me. Atrocious performance.’
‘A defensive disaster class.’
‘We’re at least a preseason and a summer window away from being where Newcastle are now.’
‘Difference in physicality and intensity was staggering.’
‘They’re not a better team than us technically in a few areas, we can say Isak and Tonali are for sure.
They have better athletes and engines like Joelinton we’re just far off it.
We are not a premier league team, our squad would be great in La Liga where you can play and have more time.
We need great athletes that can run for an entire game and we just don’t have those players’
‘Weren’t dominated, but offered nothing, our goal was our one attack.’
‘Thought we’d lose but really didn’t want to get battered 4 1. That was the worst performance since the restart. Newcastle were far too powerful for us.’
‘Terrible defending today. Tactically we were outmatched for lengthy stretches.’
‘Outfought and outrun. Newcastle have traditional profiles for their positions, who knows, maybe there’s something in that…’
‘Wasn’t expecting too much. They are a very physical side that the referee seemed happy with. They are also full of goals, they took their chances, we again didn’t. He made subs and it is obvious a lot of them are players coming back from injury so looked rusty. It makes a big difference when you have a class midfield like that, a good goalie and people queuing up to score up front.’
‘Newcastle are a better, stronger well drilled team.’
‘Four goals without Isak getting anything is not what I expected.’
‘They get goals from everywhere. We rely on either Bruno, well we rely on Bruno.’
‘Really don’t like Newcastle. Well done for beating Liverpool in cup final but that’s about it. They put away fans somewhere high up in the stadium, miles away from pitch it seems. Still great support from our fans to team and Amorim especially.’
‘If Newcastle finish 5th and we win Europa, will it kick them into Europa?
Would be so sweet if so.’
‘Newcastle are an admittedly very physical side but my God we looked a million miles off them with regards to strength, pace, athleticism and not to mention effort. But the purely physical difference is frightening.
Where does this blame lie? Coaches, fitness team? Or players themselves. In the 94th minute, Tonali was gliding through our team over about 70 yards while Mount, who had just come on looked like he was running in sand, it was Gary Neville v West Brom vibes. Its a huge part of why players are just running through us and scoring too, we simply cannot physically compete.
Combined with what seems to be a very fragile mentality, I would choose to play Man Utd every single week if I was part of a strong, athletic team.
So can this squad be improved in this regard. And if so, why hasnt it been done. And if not, then do we need even more of a rebuild than we might think.
All in all a very very sad showing.’
‘The way Tonali was sprinting after 90 minutes just seems off to me.’
‘ive thought this a few times watching newcastle. guimaraes and joelinton too – credit to their physcaility but i cant remember many players in all my life watching that keep at it at 100% until full time. this newcastle team is full of them.’
‘We have quite a high level of fitness across the squad (with a few obvious elderly exceptions), the problem is the lack of strength, pace, power, and acceleration.’
‘We have no athletes in our squad, and we don’t have prime iniesta, xavi and busquets to beat that play style.
It’s clear that none of our current midfielders can compete with teams like Newcastle.’
‘We weren’t prepared for Newcastle’s intensity, which is what caused all of our problems. Fitness wouldn’t really make the difference here when the other side are simply better.’
‘It is recruitment and thinking we are smarter than everybody else when playing weak players in the middle of the park, timid players on the flanks and players without threat up front. Newcastle are way more dangerous to us because they will hit us on our weakpoints.’
‘I dont know, I thought we set out a good plan early and made sure they didnt get up a head of steam so there was no early intensity. They just physically wore us down. Id say if it lasted 15 more minutes wed have had guys going down with cramp.’
‘This isn’t a fitness issue. Newcastle are just a bigger, stronger, more powerful team than us. This is the profile of player we’ve been talking about for a bit now, we know that we want to buy more athletic players so we can compete physically with the likes of Newcastle and other teams in the premier league.’
‘Some of our players are pretty tall but Newcastle looked like giants up against us. Complete domination.
Incredible how EtH was constantly going on about the need to get fitter and how the physicality of the league was so strong and yet he did so little to rectify it.
Half the reason we look better in the EL is probably due to it being slower paced games.’
‘I mean this was one of the more predictable results we’ve had in a while. Newcastle are possibly the worst matchup in the league for us, as they athletically miles ahead of us and have forwards that can take advantage of our mistakes.
Some of us have been saying for years that we are hilariously poor athletically. It gets exposed in games like this.’
‘I hope Zirkzee’s injury is fairly minor – he’s turning into something special.’
‘They are simply a much better team than us. Tactically, individually, physically.’
‘We are 14th, Newcastle are 4th and it looked like that today. They are far superior to us at every facet of the game
It takes some doing to spend a much as we did on this squad and end up with such a pile of dross. The worse ran major football club in all of Europe.’
‘We went into the break 1-1. It was our capitulation in the second half, coupled with some appalling errors from our players which led directly to two of the second half goals, and poor overall team play which led to the other. If we play the second half as we did in the first, we could have got something from this game.’
‘Nah. They were much better than us the whole game. We were lucky to be drawing at half time.’
‘[Man] United fan for over 60 years and I think this is the first match I have seen that I was laughing at how bad we are. I didn’t know what else to do!’
‘It really did look like the 4th playing against the 14th, and man that’s just sad.
Almost entirely toothless upfront and mostly with no ideas how to get into Newcastle’s box, large parts of the game were spent pressed into United’s third of the pitch. Their attackers found way too much room and gaps in the defending, I can’t even say that the result is undeserved in the amount of goals they scored even if the last one was gifted to them by Bayindir.’
‘My biggest gripe is Newcastle were able to push us into making them mistakes and have real control over the game, all whilst having their manager laying in a hospital bed.
That’s the difference between good, athletic and committed players. We still have a lot of rot and a heck of a lot of players who are way off it physically.’
‘That was genuinely a lower mid-table side getting a hiding from a CL team. Terrifying.’
‘The trajectory of both sides has been night and day since we beat them in the league cup final.’
‘Newcastle have spent wisely.’
‘Unfortunately, Newcastle are on their way to being title challengers in a year or two while we look like we are going backwards.’
‘We would have all wanted [Man] Utd to win this one, or at least get a draw, but you’d have to mad to have expected anything but a Newcastle victory.’
