Manchester United appear to be seriously considering a pursuit of Atalanta holding midfielder Ederson this summer.

Since Ruben Amorim arrived at Man United earlier this season, the Portuguese manager has been faced with the monstrous task of improving the struggling club’s fortunes on the pitch.

In addition to bringing his own unique playing style to the fold, Amorim turned to the transfer market to boost his squad. While a quiet January transfer window, Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven have proven to be much-needed reinforcements in defence.

This summer, it appears that Amorim will look to add even more talent to United’s ranks.

Last December, The Peoples Person noted United’s interest in Ederson, acknowledging how the dynamic holding midfielder could be an ideal fit for Amorim’s system.

Now, it appears as if United have stepped up their transfer pursuit.

“Liverpool and Manchester United have signalled an interest in rivalling Manchester City for the potential transfer of Atalanta midfielder Ederson,” CaughtOffside reported this morning, indicating that a fierce transfer race between the two bitter rivals could be on the cards.

“The Brazil international has shone in Serie A and has long been a top target for Man City, whose interest remains the most advanced for the time being, sources have told CaughtOffside.”

“However, it is also understood that both Liverpool and Man Utd have reached out in recent weeks to gather information on Ederson‘s situation ahead of this summer,” the report added.

Ederson have been a revelation for Atalanta this season, shining at the summit of European football.

Playing in nine UEFA Champions League matches this season, the Brazilian has won 56% of his ground duels and an impressive 64% of his aerial battles.

He has been particularly effective with the ball at his feet, with 69% dribbling and 91% passing, including 94% passing accuracy within his own half.

Ederson has also been a great asset when tracking back in defence, averaging 4.9 ball recoveries per game and 0.8 clearances. He has also made just a single error leading to a shot and no errors leading to a goal. (Stats via Sofascore)

It is thus not surprising that Fabio Capello called the Brazilian “out of this world for his ability to combine running, physicality, technique and intelligence.”

With an ageing Casemiro expected to leave United in the near future and Christian Eriksen’s future unknown, the club will need some new blood in the midfield.

Given his versatility and quality performances, Ederson could prove to be United’s ideal solution in the middle of the park.
