Amorim continues to back Onana as he suffers through a difficult season
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim confirmed that he does not plan to drop Andre Onana after his goalkeeper made two major errors in the Europa League draw away to Lyon.
Onana was at fault for both Thiago Almada’s opener and Rayan Cherki’s 95th-minute equaliser. He failed to claim Almada’s cross, watching helplessly as it bounced into his net before spilling a shot from Georges Mikautadze in second-half injury time, allowing Cherki to poach a late equaliser with mere seconds left in the match.
This comes after Onana had come under heavy criticism ahead of the game. In the midst of a difficult season, Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic called the Ghana international ‘one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history.’
Despite the brace of mistakes, though, Amorim said Onana would not be dropped for the second leg or this weekend’s Premier League trip to Newcastle.
Asked whether Onana would be replaced, he said: “No, we continue to do the same thing. Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win every match.”
The Portuguese acknowledged that mistakes against a side as talented as Lyon would always be punished.
He continued: “When one player has a mistake, the whole team has a mistake so we continue like that.
“The important thing is to focus on the next game for the league and then the second leg against Lyon.”
United were not considered favourites ahead of their trip across the Channel but gave up a potential win in crushing fashion. Leny Yoro’s first-half stoppage time and Joshua Zirkzee’s 88th-minute would-be winner were cruelly cancelled out by Cherki with the last kick of the game.
Amorim shared in his squad’s visible frustration but acknowledged their progress: “We are really disappointed, we should have take the one goal advantage to the next game but we have the next game in our home and we will try to win that.
“In the first half we had some difficulties to press the opponent because they play different, but especially in the second half, we adapt and control the game.
“We are improving game by game but we need to be more clinical. Again, it is two games, this is halftime, we look to the next one.”
