Roberto Mancini has decided to lend a hand to Sampdoria, where he spent most of his playing career, which are at serious risk of being relegated to Serie C. He won’t coach them despite some early rumours. Instead, he will help them as a consultant, Corriere della Sera informs.
He has put his fingerprints on their latest technical revolution to try to salvage the season. The team will be managed by three of his long-time assistants. Alberico Evani will be the gaffer, Attilio Lombardo his right-hand man, and Giovanni Invernizzi will be part of the staff. One of his three sons, Roberto, is returning as a director after a spell at Barcelona.
Mancini will support Sampdoria president Massimo Manfredi down the stretch and in the summer, unless a big team offers him its bench. He played for the Blucerchiati for 15 years, winning one Scudetto and losing one Champions League final.
As a coach, he lifted three Serie A titles, one Premier League, four Coppa Italia, and a few more domestic cups. He left Italy abruptly for Saudi Arabia in August 2023. He won Euro 2020 but didn’t qualify for the ensuing World Cup and jumped ship due to disagreements with federal president Gabriele Gravina.
Sampdoria turned to Mancini in a time of dire need. They’d be relegated if the season ended today, as they are third-to-last. Still, they are tied with Reggiana, which would take part in the play-out. The gap with the teams ahead of them is small. The Blucerchiati have never been in Serie C in their history.
