Manchester United have one foot in the Europa League final after beating Athletic Club 3-0 at Estadio de San Mamés in the first leg of their semi-final tie.
United started a bit slow, as they struggled to cope with Athletic’s relentless press. But, it was the Red Devils who took the lead at the half-hour mark.
Harry Maguire produced some fantastic footwork on the right wing before delivering an excellent ball that Ugarte headed into the path of Casemiro, who was lurking unmarked at the far post. The Brazilian made no mistake, sending the ball into the back of the net.
United doubled their advantage just seven minutes later through Bruno Fernandes, who struck from the penalty spot after Dani Vivian was judged to have illegally brought down Rasmus Hojlund inside the box.
Fernandes put the game to bed moments before the break, getting on the end of a clever flick from Ugarte and firing home.
There were several standout performers for the Red Devils, with Ugarte being one of them.
Like most of his teammates, Ugarte was a bit shak in the early stages of proceedings but once he got into his rhythm, he didn’t look back and produced a dominant display to help United ease past Athletic.
In addition to his two assists, the Uruguayan successfully found his teammates with 37 of the 44 passes he attempted (84% pass completion rate). Two of his passes were key passes and he created as many chances, both of which ended up being goals.
He fired two shots, one of which was on target but the other didn’t require Julen Agirrezabala to swing into action.
Ugarte completed both dribbles he embarked on. He was brilliant defensively, winning four of the six ground duels he delved into and coming out on top in the one aerial challenge he contested.
The 24-year-old made one clearance, one interception and one tackle.
It was a breathtaking display from Ugarte, who ran the show for his side in the middle of the park.

United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to Brentford. They will then host Athletic for the second leg next Thursday.
