Marcelo and Fluminense FC have mutually agreed to terminate the player’s contract after falling out with the team’s manager in the middle of a game.

The former Real Madrid star was receiving tactical instructions on the sideline from head coach Mano Menezes ahead of being brought on during their 2-2 draw with Gremio, which took place Friday evening local time.

However, Menezes seemingly took exception to something Marcelo said or did and waved him back to the bench instead of subbing him on as planned.

Fluminense released a statement on Saturday confirming that the full-back was no longer employed by the club.

“Fluminense FC and Marcelo Vieira announce the termination of their contract by mutual agreement between the parties,” the statement read.

“A graduate of the youth teams, Marcelo returned to Fluminense in 2023, having participated in the conquest of the 2023 Campeonato Carioca titles, the unprecedented 2023 Conmebol Libertadores titles and the 2024 Recopa.

“The institutional and emotional ties between Fluminense and Marcelo continue to be maintained. The athlete’s name was recently immortalized at the Xerém training center stadium.

“Fluminense thanks Marcelo and will continue, as always, to support his success in all his challenges.”

A five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, he joined the ‘Big Flu’ in 2023 following a short spell with Olympiacos. He helped the Brazilian outfit win last year’s Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the European Cup.

The 36-year-old began his career at Fluminense 19 years ago before making the move to the Spanish capital in 2007.
