Could the Finnish forward be set for a Riverside Stadium exit this coming summer?

Middlesbrough have invested heavily on their attacking unit over the years, and they've also made plenty of money from players in that area of the pitch in recent times, with Chuba Akpom, Marcus Tavernier and Emmanuel Latte Lath creating significant profit.

And when Boro signed Marcus Forss in 2022 from Brentford, they were probably anticipating making a big profit on their initial £3 million investment on a striker with plenty of potential.

Available from the Bees due to Ivan Toney's significant and spectacular rise to stardom, Forss needed to get back on track after a disappointing stint at Hull City on loan in 2021-22, and 10 goals in his debut campaign for Boro was only really scratching the surface.

What would follow though was a disastrous second season on Teesside for the 21-cap Finland international - whilst he scored seven times in 21 appearances in the Championship, which is a respectable one in three record, Forss would miss half the season with injury troubles, and that is something that plagued him during the first half of 2024-25 too.

Mainly used as an impact player this season by Michael Carrick, it wouldn't be a total shock if Boro were to try and cash in on Forss this summer, given his lack of goals and minutes, although FLW's Middlesbrough fan pundit Jasper Hudson wouldn't mind keeping the 25-year-old around.

"I wouldn't be opposed to giving Forss a new contract," Jasper told FLW.

"He's an alright player for the Championship, a fairly solid back-up option, but I don't think he'd be anything more than that, so I think the contract would have to reflect he's a back-up player.

"Thinking back to his first season with Carrick, he was really good in that attack off the right-wing, so it would be nice if we could keep hold of him, and maybe he could get back to that form.

"But because of injuries, I just think he's going to be nothing more than a back-up for us, if we do offer him a new contract, or if he's willing to accept a contract knowing that's what he'll be."

How much Marcus Forss is earning per week at Middlesbrough and how long his contract is

Given he came from a Premier League club at the time of his arrival three years ago, you would perhaps expect Forss to be one of the top earners at the Riverside Stadium.

However, according to estimates made by Capology, Forss is only eighth in the list of permanent Boro players in terms of weekly earnings, with a wage of £14,038 per week.

The experienced pair of Luke Ayling and Jonny Howson, as well as January recruit Whittaker, are estimated to be the top earners on Teesside, with ex-Leeds defender Ayling said to be earning double what Forss is.

As for his contract length, Forss signed a four-year contract at Middlesbrough back in the summer of 2022, meaning that it will expire in June 2026, should there be no extensions.

That means going into the transfer window after the 2024-25 season has ended, Forss will only have one year left on his contract - leaving Boro with a decision to potentially make.

Middlesbrough may see Marcus Forss as a sellable asset in the summer of 2025

Injuries across the last two seasons have really stunted Forss' growth on both a club and international level, so you have to wonder what Boro plan to do with the ex-Brentford man this summer.

Formerly a centre-forward, Forss found a home more often than not on the right flank under Michael Carrick after he arrived to replace Chris Wilder, and that is mainly where he plays when he gets minutes.

Ben Doak and Morgan Whittaker's presence during 2024-25 in that role has seen Forss' minutes suffer as a result, as well as his own personal struggles with injuries, and with a year remaining on his contract, the club may come to the decision that it may be best getting some money back on the £3 million outlay, rather than keeping him around as depth and potentially losing him for nothing in 2026.
