Matej Vydra has revealed that Vincent Kompany almost convinced him to stay at Burnley after talks with the Clarets boss.

The forward suffered a serious knee injury in the previous campaign as Burnley were relegated from the Premier League, which meant there were doubts about his future when his deal expired in the summer.

Of course, the change in management, with Kompany arriving, complicated things further, but Vydra ultimately left on a free and he recently joined Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic.

However, it could have been different, as Vydra explained to the Athletic that Kompany was open to keeping him at Turf Moor and he was tempted to stay.

I was 100 per cent decided I wanted to leave Burnley, but when I spoke to Kompany, I was 50/50. The first time he asked me what had happened with the injury, what my situation was under Sean Dyche, what my plan was, my feelings, and if I wanted to stay.

He talked about his game plan and how he wanted to play. I thought it would suit me more compared to Sean Dyche’s style which wasn’t great for me. The way he spoke about me, he knew almost everything about me and I was pleased with what he said.”

Did John Guidetti ever score a goal for Burnley after joining on loan?

Yes No

The verdict

This is an interesting insight from Vydra and it shows the sort of influence that Kompany has on players and why his style of play is appealing.

You can understand why Vydra believes this approach would’ve suited him and many would agree with that assessment, although it’s not as if Burnley are in a poor position now.

Kompany will be pleased with what he’s got in terms of his squad and with the way Burnley are playing right now, Vydra may regret not sticking around.
