The Blues have been interested in forward Tel since last summer and have enquired over his availability this month amid Bayern’s interest in Christopher Nkunku.

Prior to Wednesday night, the 19-year-old had played little more than 200 minutes in the Bundesliga this season.

Though, he got another 45 minutes under his belt as he was introduced at half-time in place of Kinglsey Coman and immediately made a contribution as he claimed an assist for Leroy Sane to make it 4-0.

Speaking about the somewhat surprising substitution in the post-match press conference, Kompany revealed Coman was not injured, insisting that Tel had earned the opportunity.

"No. We have so many games and it’s important to keep the squad fit," Kompany told reporters. "Mathys trained well and it was simply his moment.”

This development comes after Chelsea’s hopes of signing Tel in the January transfer window were dealt a blow, with Bayern Munich stressing that their “clear plan” is for the teenager to “make his breakthrough” in Germany.

“Mathys Tel is a very important player for us,” Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund said. “We are in very good contact because he’s a great talent and should play an important role for us. We have had many discussions.

“Our clear goal is for Mathys to make his breakthrough with us. We are very happy with our squad, quality and quantity wise.

“Of course if a player is unhappy, we can talk about it. Our clear plan with Mathys is for him to make his breakthrough here.”
