Ross McCormack has revealed how he believes “politics” led to his unsavoury departure from Aston Villa.
McCormack joined the club for €12m in 2016, but only made 20 appearances for the club after being left out by Steve Bruce.
Poor time keeping and a lack of fitness were cited as main reasons, but the 32-year-old insists there is more to the story.
“It’s been a bit of a shambles but that’s football,” he told BBC Sport. “The club just wanted me out of the club and off the wage bill.
“I’m not sure about English football now. There’s a lot of politics in the game down there.
“It’s not just based on your attributes,” he added. “If it was, I think I’d still be down there. It was a personal thing at Aston Villa.
“I can never fully shut the door on Aston Villa, but I think it’s pretty blatantly obvious my time there is done.”
McCormack is currently on loan at Scottish Premiership side Motherwell until the end of the season.
