There was lots of perspiration but precious little inspiration as Mexico and USA played out a disappointing scoreless draw on Tuesday.
Scorers: N/A
The Stars and Stripes should have taken the lead 10 minutes before half time at the Estadio Azteca when Christian Pulisic met Timothy Weah’s centre only to direct his shot from eight yards straight at Guillermo Ochoa.
Pulisic went close again shortly after the interval but Ochoa managed to push away the Chelsea’s attacker’s cross-shot.
The visitors spurned another glorious chance with just under 20 minutes remaining when substitutes Giovanni Reyna and Jordan Pefok combined only for the latter to get his feet mixed up and screw his effort well wide.
Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano was Mexico’s greatest threat all night, and he forced a wonderful fingertip save from Zack Steffen, even if the officials missed the goalkeeper’s touch and awarded a goal kick.

Elsewhere, Costa Rica kept their chances of automatic qualification alive with a 1-0 home win over Canada, who had Mark-Anthony Kaye sent off in the 34th minute.
Despite defeat in in San José, Canada remain top of the Concacaf standings. Both the USA and Mexico are three points behind, with the former enjoying a better goal difference.
Costa Rica have moved above Panama into fourth, and currently occupy the play-off spot.
