That's according to a report from The Northern Echo on Friday morning, in what would provide Michael Carrick with a proven piece of cover at the centre-back position.

Football Insider had revealed that Portsmouth had been weighing up a move for the 27-year-old, as had fellow Championship sides Blackburn, Watford and Hull, but it's Boro who now appear confident that they will get their man.

Edmundson has fallen down the pecking order at Portman Road after the club's promotion to the Premier League, with a loan move now appearing to be necessary in order to secure regular football this season.
