Boro are closing in on the permanent signing of George Edmundson, who was on loan at the Riverside earlier this season.
Middlesbrough have agreed a deal with Ipswich Town to sign George Edmundson on a permanent deal.
This is according to Pete O'Rourke, who believes Boro have made a breakthrough in their quest to sign one of their former loanees.
Michael Carrick's side have already made two signings during this window, with both of those players arriving on Thursday.
The promising Brayden Johnson arrived from non-league outfit Eastbourne Borough - and looks set to feature in the U21s before making the step up to the first team.
Ryan Giles, who looks set to make more of an impact in the short term, has also joined after failing to enjoy a successful first half of the campaign with Hull City.
Giles was a real success at the Riverside during the 2022/23 campaign, contributing plenty going forward and playing a big part in Boro's top-six finish at the end of that season.
He will be hoping to replicate what he did a couple of years ago during the second half of this term, and if he can, the Teesside outfit could be fairly successful.
Edmundson spent the first half of the campaign at the Riverside on loan, before Ipswich recalled him earlier this month.
But with a number of options ahead of him in the pecking order, including summer signing Jacob Greaves, the Tractor Boys have decided to sanction a permanent exit for Edmundson.
According to O'Rourke, a permanent deal has now been agreed for the centre-back, who now looks set to make the move to the Riverside.
The fee agreed remains unclear at this point.
'Fridge' will fondly remember his time at Ipswich, considering the upward trajectory they have been on under Kieran McKenna.
He may not have started regularly in the past couple of years, but he has still played his part in the Tractor Boys' success.
Now is his time to make a move away from Portman Road though, for the sake of his own career.
At the Riverside, he's likely to win much more game time, and could make a real difference with the experience he has.
This could end up being an agreement that works out well for all parties, especially Boro, who will benefit from having their former loanee at their disposal after seeing him shine during the first half of the season.
