Manchester United are rapidly running out of time to take advantage of Mathys Tel’s preference for them.

It was revealed yesterday that Tottenham Hotspur had reached a ‘verbal agreement’ to sign the 19-year-old in a £50.1 million deal from Bayern Munich. This is where the North London outfit have the upper hand over United, as the board are unable to match such a fee mid-season – especially after facilitating the arrival of Patrick Dorgu.

Reputable Spurs journalist Patrick O Keefe claimed on Wednesday that Tel favoured an Old Trafford switch, which has only been further verified in the subsequent days. Peter Hall of iNews stated that the player ‘is waiting to see if United make their move in the coming days’, while Fabrizio Romano adds: “Mathys needs some time to decide… with several clubs keen and in talks.”

Tel, hailed as a ‘mini-Mbappe’ by the Bayern faithful when he broke onto the scene, is prioritising game time wherever he takes his exploits next. His only start in the Champions League came in Wednesday night’s dead-rubber against Slovan Bratislava, and he has been given the nod just twice in the Bundesliga since 2024/2025 got underway.

To make matters worse, Vincent Kompany has opted against using him for 14 matches, making it no wonder the Frenchman informed Bayern of his desire to take on a new venture elsewhere this month.

Alas, the most suitable way for United to try and hash out a deal is by taking the forward on loan whilst pledging to buy him upon the culmination of the campaign – though whether it would be enough to twist Bayern chiefs’ arms remains to be seen.
