Toronto FC has landed a coup with the transfer of Arsenal defender Zane Monlouis, 21. He inked a deal until 2026, with an option for 2028. After a disappointing stint at Reading FC, the young Englishman now has the challenge of making a name for himself in American soccer.
While he never suited up for Arsenal's first team, Monlouis honed his craft with both their U-21 squad and the youth levels of England. The European soccer upbringing has provided him with a technical skill set that could potentially bolster Toronto FC's defense, a section in much need of strengthening.
Toronto's defense was among the weakest aspects of the team last season, as they conceded 61 goals. The signing of the young center-back could prove to be a key step in rebuilding the backline and providing new options for head coach Robin Fraser.
General Manager Jason Hernandez sees Monlouis as a player with lots of space to develop and praised his development background.
"We’re excited to bring Zane in to bolster our defense. He comes from one of the best clubs in Europe and has attributes that could fit well into our tactical system."
After a disappointing season, Toronto FC is looking to rebuild, and Monlouis is part of that transformation. Now, the question is whether he can use this opportunity as a stepping stone for his career.
Monlouis will need to fight for his place and adjust to MLS in a hurry, a league with its own peculiarities and a different tempo from English football. How he adjusts and progresses throughout the season will go a long way in determining his role in the team.
The strain on Toronto FC's defense will be intense. The team cannot repeat the errors of last year and must discover consistency if they are to stay competitive. The signing of Monlouis is a step in the right direction, but the young defender must prove that he's the real deal and the answer to the team's defensive issues.
