Leagues Cup is potentially set to go under major changes heading into the 2025 campaign, according to reports from ESPN.
The annual mid-season tournament pits MLS and Liga MX clubs against each-other in a knockout format, but its strain on an already busy football calendar has been widely criticized.
According to Lizzy Becherano, the tournament could be set to only feature 18 teams from MLS, as all 29 had previously participated in the competition.
All 18 Liga MX teams will remain in the tournament, but up to 12 (including newcomers San Diego FC) MLS clubs could drop out ahead of the upcoming season.
Further constraints on the upcoming North American calendar will come in the form of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which is set to be hosted in the United States from June 5 to July 13.
