It was an impressive result for Aston Villa as they defeated Brighton 3-0 at the American Express Stadium. The Seagulls proved to be a tough opponent, but it was Unai Emery's side who found the breakthrough and then cruised through to a multi-goal win.

This was an important matchup for Villa. A lot of the Premier League has been difficult compared to the other competitions. That being said, AVFC now sits in seventh and is in a tight race between them and the teams immediately above them in the standings.

There is room for improvement, and Brighton could have easily grabbed a result on Wednesday. Still, keeping a clean sheet and securing the three points as the visiting side is a notable feat. More importantly, Villa got a result at an important part of their season.

A Champions League spot is still well in play, and they will want to continue to do well in the EPL and finish the season on a high note in the remaining league fixtures. Oftentimes, it only takes a moment to string together positives, and the forward momentum can be enough to go on a winning streak.

Important benchmark period for Aston Villa

They'll want to look less shaky at the back and have more possession moving forward, but overall, a lot of what Emery is implementing is proving to be working at the moment. Morgan Rogers spoke with the club media after the victory. He shared the following:

"We knew it was a big three points in a big week for us. To see where the rest of our season goes, especially in the Premier League."

Rogers is explaining here that the team knew how important the latest match against Brighton was. With two games against upper Premier League teams in the same week, it was important to show that they were at least on an even tier on Wednesday.

Truthfully, despite not controlling the game, there were a lot of positives, including the array of options for Emery to pivot to at any point. For many fans, the focus needs to be more on the FA Cup. And that line of thought is reasonable enough. Finishing well in the EPL, particularly against the better sides, is equally important in April and May, though. There is another big test against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, and they'll want to earn the three points at Villa Park.
