Mason Mount believes Manchester United can still have a ‘positive end to the season’ despite suffering their 16th Premier League defeat.

Mount opened the scoring in the game as he netted just his second goal for United. However, their lead was short-lived. Brentford scored four to take a 4-1 lead before the match eventually finished 4-3 to the hosts.

Speaking to PLP after the game, Mount conceded: ”We need to do better. We need to win this game.

“We started well but that second half and end of the first half conceding goals where we knew what was coming. We knew they put crosses in box and we need to defend that better.”

United are without a win in their last six Premier League games. It was a rotated side that started today as Ruben Amorim rested key players. Despite this, Mount insisted: “We still need to perform. There was changes but it’s Manchester United so any team that goes out there that puts on the shirt we need to perform and win games.

“I know there’s a big game on Thursday but first and foremost was today. We needed to win the game but we didn’t. It was too late when they scored four.”

United did show character as they fought back to almost level. Their English midfielder maintained: “We’ve shown that before. We never let the game go until the final whistle but we can’t let ourselves get in that position.

“It’s a bit of personality and character but we shouldn’t get in that position.”

United return to action on Thursday with the second leg of their Europa League semi-final. The Reds are in a strong position after winning the first leg 3-0 in Bilbao.

Mount said: ”We can get into the Champions League next season and that’s the most important thing.

“The season we’ve had in the Premier League is something we need to look at massively but if we can get into the final and win that it’s a positive end to the season.

“It’s a massive end to the season. We have a big game on Thursday. It doesn’t matter the scoreline. We attack it like it’s 0-0. We know what we need to do.”
