He also stated that he had come close on several occasions to returning in the 12 years since his departure for Manchester United, and now wants to repay the faith to the club which "gave him an opportunity to step up into the Premier League" in 2002.

Moyes' return comes under new ownership in the form of The Friedkin Group, and they have "big hopes that they can make a difference to the football club".

In regards to adding to his squad, Moyes is hopeful of making signings this month, but says he wants to find out "exactly what's happening" at the club first.

Only rock bottom Southampton have scored fewer goals than Everton so far this season, and a new striker could be targeted. However, Moyes added that he "needs all players to chip in with goals."

The Merseyside club are currently just one point outside the relegation zone, albeit with a game in hand on the sides around them.
