Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries has been branded a “lion” for his performance against Atalanta in the Supercoppa Italiana.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, hail the Dutchman’s decisive efforts. They also note that Inter captain Lautaro Martinez continued his recent struggles.

Dumfries started on the right flank for Inter in yesterday’s Supercoppa semifinal clash.

The 28-year-old has gotten a run of regular starts in the wingback position in recent weeks.

And yesterday, Dumfries looked to be in full form charging up and down the right flank.

The most eye-catching aspect of Dumfries’s performance was certainly his two goals.

The former PSV wingback opened the scoring with a bicycle kick.

And somehow, Dumfries’s second goal was no less impressive. He smashed the ball just below the crossbar with a first-time effort from the edge of the penalty area.

Beyond that, Dumfries was defensively resolute. And he pushed back Atalanta wingback Matteo Ruggeri.

Dumfries came close to scoring in the first half, but for a last-ditch tackle by Ruggeri.

Meanwhile, the Gazzetta also note that Inter captain Lautaro Martinez continued to struggle.

The Argentine will have hoped that his goal against Cagliari in Serie A last weekend was the end of his goalscoring woes.

But once again, for all his effort, yesterday was another match without a goal for Martinez.
