Former Netherlands international and Spartak Moscow star Quincy Promes has been sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in cocaine smuggling.
That is according to Voetbal International, who reports that the 32-year-old has been told his sentence for allegedly smuggling over 1,350 kilograms of cocaine back in January 2020 when the winger played for Ajax.
The prosecution had been seeking a nine-year prison sentence but that never came to fruition and Promes will likely appeal the decision as he has continually maintained his innocence, with the main evidence against him consisting of intercepted “crypto messages”.
The former Netherlands international, who earned 50 caps for his country, is currently playing his football in Russia with Spartak Moscow. Russia has no extradition treaty with the Netherlands, meaning that Promes can likely continue his career with Spartak if he simply refuses to return to his homeland.
The 32-year-old has been in trouble with the law before as he was given an 18-month jail term for assault last year after stabbing his cousin at a party, as reported by GOAL.
It will interesting to see how this situation plays out as it looks like Promes has found himself in a lot of trouble back in his homeland.
