Newcastle United are on the verge of securing highly-rated Malaga winger Antonio Cordero, according to the Daily Mail. He will officially join the Toons on July 1 if they can get a deal over the line.
The Magpies have beaten competition from European powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid to bring Cordero to St. James’ Park.
Newcastle have moved swiftly to advance negotiations. The 18-year-old and his representatives have held talks with Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell after a visit to Tyneside.
The Premier League club is increasingly confident of finalising a pre-contract agreement with Cordero, who is set to become a free agent in the summer.
Despite strong interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid, Newcastle positioned themselves at the front of the queue for his signature and made significant progress over the past few days.
Cordero has impressed in La Liga II, recording four goals and six assists in 25 appearances this term. He has become a mainstay in the XI and established himself as one of the most promising young attackers in Spanish football.
There is also speculation that Turkish midfielder Baran Yildiz, another 18-year-old talent, is set to arrive from Genclerbirligi. It is expected that both players could be loaned out in their first season as Newcastle head of strategic partnerships, Jack Ross, explores suitable clubs to aid their development.
The Spanish youth international, primarily a left-winger but versatile across attacking positions, could become a key figure for the Magpies in the years ahead.
If Newcastle sign the youngster, it will be a massive coup, considering he is one of most sought-after young wingers in Europe, with La Liga giants Madrid and Barcelona lining up to take him.
He was linked to Arsenal some time ago. European clubs had begun to take notice of his prodigious talent, but Newcastle are frontrunners and look set to sign him.
