The 29-year-old has fallen out of favour at St James’ Park in recent times, and it makes sense that the club are no longer looking to keep him.
Targett looked like a promising signing when he first joined Newcastle from Southampton, but he’s on wages of as much as £100,000 per week, so the Magpies need to offload him.
Financial Fair Play can make it a bit harder for teams to have as much squad depth as they might like, so NUFC would do well to get this high earner off their wage bill.

Some player sales would probably help, but in general it looks like Newcastle should have a lot of money to spend this summer.
On top of that, the north east side could also land one big name on a free transfer in the form of Lille striker Jonathan David.
David is linked with Newcastle in the same report from the Chronicle that casts doubt over Targett’s future at the club.
Newcastle have made great progress under Eddie Howe, reaching the Champions League with a top four finish two years ago.
It now looks like NUFC are set to return to the competition, and they’ll also have one eye on second place in the Premier League table.
Newcastle’s next game is away to Arsenal, which could prove an important six-pointer for Howe’s men as they look to finish as high as possible.
