Newcastle United will travel to London Stadium to face West Ham United in an important Premier League clash on Monday night.
This has been a terrible week for the Magpies. Newcastle decided to appeal against Anthony Gordon’s red card which means he will miss three games, including the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool. Lewis Hall has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury.
Ahead of the match, Eddie Howe confirmed today that centre-back Sven Botman will undergo surgery on his knee after he felt a discomfort this week.
The 25-year-old had two ACL operations last season, and he will have another operation on his knee after he felt discomfort during training.
Howe said to reporters: “We’ve been trying to get him back to full fitness and he was actually very close for the Brighton game, just the day before one of the last actions in training, he felt the same problem in his knee.
“So that meant, again, just a sort of a resetting but we still hoped that he could come back. But then this week again he’s got the same discomfort so looks like he’ll now have to have an operation.
“This has come actually from a knock in one of his first games back. He didn’t view it as a big issue but I think there’s, without going into too much technically, he just needs a really small operation just to clear out some fluid. Then he’ll be fine again.”
Newcastle think Botman will be out for around eight weeks, and it means he will be able to return towards the end of the season.
The Netherlands defender has managed only three starts in the Premier League this season, and his injury issues are becoming a major concern for the club.
Alexander Isak, Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier have been passed fit amid minor injury concerns. With two training sessions left, Howe is confident that the trio will be able to feature against the Hammers on Monday night.
