Newcastle United travel to Birmingham City in one of the most intriguing clashes of the FA Cup’s fourth round.
Eddie Howe’s side secured a place in the Carabao Cup final on Wednesday and are now aiming for success in another cup competition. The Magpies beat Arsenal 2-0 at St James’ Park and will face Liverpool at Wembley next month. It’s an opportunity to end the club’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.
Their opponents this weekend, Birmingham, are leading League One this season. The Blues are aiming to bounce back from relegation last season at the first attempt and have spent heavily in pursuit of promotion. Backed by American owners, Birmingham broke the League One transfer record three times on route to a £30m spend last summer.
The stage is set for a classic cup tie at St Andrews.
After the energy expended in midweek, Howe looks likely to rotate his side this weekend. Newcastle face Manchester City in a crucial top-four showdown next weekend and the trip to the Midlands could offer several fringe players a chance to impress.
Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley will hope to come in, though Harvey Barnes, Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton remain sidelined. Callum Wilson returned off the bench in midweek and could hand Alexander Isak a much needed breather.
Newcastle predicted XI: Pope; Livramento, Krafth, Schar, Botman, Targett; Murphy, Miley, Longstaff, Willock; Wilson.
Birmingham City host Newcastle United in the FA Cup’s fourth round on Saturday 8th February 2025. Kick-off is 17:45 GMT.
The fixture will be broadcast in the UK on BBC One.
