Liverpool’s pursuit of attacking reinforcements has led to speculation surrounding Julian Alvarez, but Atletico Madrid have swiftly dismissed any talk of a potential transfer. The Mirror reports that Atletico’s sporting director, Carlos Busero, has refuted claims that Liverpool have submitted an official offer, reinforcing the club’s stance that the Argentine forward is not for sale.
Alvarez has been in exceptional form this season, scoring 23 goals in 44 games. His contributions have made him a vital part of Diego Simeone’s squad as they push for La Liga success following their Champions League exit to Real Madrid.

“The talk about Liverpool submitting an official offer to sign our player Julian Alvarez is incorrect,” Busero told 365scores, before further clarifying: “What is being circulated is just rumours.” He also stressed that Alvarez remains committed to Atletico, with no plans for a summer departure.
Liverpool’s interest in an elite number nine has been well documented, with Arne Slot reportedly keen to add attacking firepower to his squad. The club’s current forwards, including Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota, have struggled for consistency, prompting increased scrutiny over their roles in Liverpool’s long-term plans.
Nunez, in particular, has faced questions over his finishing ability, netting just seven goals in all competitions this season. Meanwhile, Jota, despite flashes of brilliance, has failed to score in his last 10 appearances. With a demanding Premier League campaign ahead, Liverpool are expected to be active in the transfer market.

While Atletico’s firm stance suggests Alvarez will not be moving this summer, Liverpool’s search for attacking reinforcements will continue. With Nunez attracting interest from Saudi Arabia and Jota’s form under scrutiny, the Reds will likely be monitoring multiple targets as they aim to strengthen their frontline for the new era under Slot.
For Liverpool fans, the Julian Alvarez rumours felt like an exciting prospect – but also an unlikely one. While Alvarez is an exceptional talent with Premier League experience, the reality is that Atletico Madrid have little reason to sell, especially after losing key figures in the past.
That said, the need for a clinical number nine at Liverpool is clear. Darwin Nunez, for all his work rate and physical presence, has been wasteful in front of goal, while Diogo Jota’s inconsistency means Liverpool have lacked a reliable finisher when it matters most. With Arne Slot looking to build his attack, fans will expect a serious investment in the forward line.
If Alvarez is truly unavailable, Liverpool must turn their attention elsewhere. A proven goalscorer who can thrive in a high-pressing system is essential if they are to compete with Manchester City and Arsenal next season. Names like Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Šeško have been linked, and a move for one of them may be more realistic than prying Alvarez away from Madrid.
Regardless of how the summer unfolds, Liverpool’s fanbase will expect the club to make a statement signing in attack. Slot’s arrival marks a new chapter, and without a reliable striker, any hopes of reclaiming the Premier League title may remain out of reach.
