Not Just The Penalty Decision – Doveri Under Fire For Inconsistent Refereeing & Missing Yellow Cards In Napoli 1-1 Inter Milan Clash

Daniele Doveri has received criticism for missing some clear yellow cards in yesterday’s Serie A match between Napoli and Inter Milan.
Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that the experienced referee put in an inconsistent display.
There were two notable penalty appeals in yesterday’s top-of-the-table Serie A clash.
Inter wanted a spot kick for a Scott McTominay shove on Denzel Dumfries. And the Corriere argue that referee Daniele Doveri should have awarded one.
On the other hand, the newspaper argue, Doveri got it right on Napoli’s handball appeal.
It was true that the ball made contact with the arm of Denzel Dumfries after Leonardo Spinazzola’s shot. However, it was not extended from his body, and he had little way of getting it out of the way.
But beyond those two penalty appeals, the Corriere argue, it was not the best day at the office from Doveri.
The 47-year-old is one of the Italian referees with the most experience.

And the hope was certainly that Doveri would stamp his authority on the match.
But in truth, the veteran official sometimes seemed at risk of losing control of proceedings.
On the one hand, there were a few occasions where Doveri whistled for very soft fouls.
Then on the other, the referee failed to spot a couple of fairly obvious yellow cards.
First, there was a blatant foul by Napoli defender Amir Rrahmani to stop a dangerous Marcus Thuram. It looked an obvious enough booking, yet Doveri didn’t seem to think so.
Then, there was an elbow by Inter defender Yann Bisseck in a physical tussle with Scott McTominay. Again, Doveri was extremely lenient in not booking the German.
