TalkSPORT presenter Gabriel Agbonlahor has named the Newcastle United player he is worried about.
Newcastle are not having the best of times at the moment. Eddie Howe’s side could miss out on a European place in the Premier League table this season.
The Magpies side are 12th with 20 points from 15 matches. They are seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.
With the likes of Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur all above them in the league table, Newcastle, linked with Johan Bakayoko, have to hope that a lot of things go their way for them to finish in the Premier League top four.
Newcastle have had injury problems this season, and one of the players who is unable to play for them at the moment is Callum Wilson. The £20 million (Sky Sports) striker has played just four times in the Premier League all season.
Wilson has had back and hamstring issues for much of this season, and now the striker has suffered a hamstring problem (The Daily Mail) that is likely to keep him out of action for the next two months.
Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor was discussing Newcastle on talkSPORT on Thursday morning.
While noting the injury issues that Wilson has had for a while, he said that he is worried about the striker’s future.
Agbonlahor said about Wilson on talkSPORT (7:24am, December 12, 2024): “If Isak gets injured, they have got no striker because Callum Wilson since 2020, has missed 100 games due to injury.
“He has missed 15 games this season due to a back injury, now two months out with a hamstring injury.
“Missed 28 games last season. So if you are looking at Callum Wilson now, he is 32. Not looking good for him.”
Wilson is out of contract at Newcastle at the end of the season. It is hard to see the Premier League club hand him a new deal.
After all, Wilson simply cannot stay fit. While that is unfortunate for the striker, for Newcastle, it is not good enough. They cannot rely on him.
When fit and available, Wilson, linked with Southampton and Crystal Palace, is an asset. The Englishman scored 10 goals and gave one assist in 26 competitive matches last season. Wilson scored 18 goals and gave five assists in 31 Premier League matches for Newcastle in 2022-23.
Other clubs may not been too keen on Wilson in the summer of 2025 even on a free transfer due to his injury problems.
