Another installment of the Hudson River derby is up and running and we already have a potential goal of the week nominee.
As NYCFC and NYRB locked horns at the iconic Yankee Stadium, it was the Boys in Blue that raced to an early 1-0 lead in the Bronx with a 13th-minute goal from Costa Rican ace Alonso Martínez.
The 26-year-old international striker, who remains a key man under Pascal Jensen, hit his 7th goal of the season as he looks to climb up the ladder amid the Golden Boot race with a rasping drive from outside the area to beat Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel.
Martínez nearly made it 2-0 before the 20-minute mark when he outpaced Red Bulls defender Sean Nealis to get on the end of a ball over the top from Julián Fernández, but Coronel did well to deny him of a brace.
But after a pair of recent disappointing results against CF Montréal and D.C. United, Martínez's strike will hopefully put the B Train back on schedule.
