The Ballon d’Or Gala is the talk of the town at the moment for all the wrong reasons after Real Madrid decided to skip the ceremony after news of Rodri winning the award over Vinicius Jr broke out.

Also given out on the night, however, was the Women’s Ballon d’Or which saw a relatively calm buildup to the final list.

Needless to say, Barça Femeni enjoyed strong representation in the nominees with Aitana Bonmati, Caroline Graham Hansen, Patricia Guijarro, Salma Paralluelo, Alexia Putellas, Mariona Caldentey, and Ewa Pajor, along with former star Lucy Bronze all nominated.

In the end, it was the club’s Aitana Bonmati who was named the winner of the prestigious award on the night, for the second year in a row. Her accomplishment, however, does not come as a surprise in any measure.

Bonmati, last season, won Liga F, the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Copa de la Reina and the Spanish Women’s Super Cup with Barcelona as an integral part of the team’s attack.

Bonmati won the Ballon d’Or last year as well and was the overwhelming favourite for this edition’s award with 19 goals in 41 games once more last season. This season, the 26-year-old already has three goals and an assist to her name in five appearances.

Of all the Barcelona Femeni nominees, Putellas (10th), Hansen (2nd), Bonmati, Paralluelo (3rd) and Caldentey (8th) finished in the top ten and thus occupied half of the list.

Patri Guijarro finished 11th while former star Lucy Bronze stood 20th. Ewa Pajor, meanwhile, was closer to the tail end in 29th place.

Meanwhile, Barcelona Femeni also won the Women’s Club of the Year award at the ceremony.
